Crew to Open Spring Season with Regional Rivals

Drexel Crew opens its 2010 spring season on the Schuylkill River as the Dragons welcome rivals Delaware, Saint Joseph's and La Salle for a dual on March 13 starting at 9:30 a.m. with the women's varsity eight race. The men's varsity eight race will follow with the final competition of the eight races scheduled to start at 11:15 a.m. as the women's freshman four wrap up the action.
The Marlene Buckley, Drexel's varsity eight, earned a berth in the grand finals at Dad Vail a season ago and will be returning a number of talented rowers for this season. On Saturday, the boat will feature coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Candace Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain. The men's varsity eight, in the Annette Pennoni, will be led by three-year varsity eight coxswain Steve Matyas who will be guiding stroke Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Aleksander Radovic, Pat McGann, Marty Khait, Lorenzo Albala, Anthony Fittipaldi and bow Jacob Sloan. The men will also send a "B" boat to the varsity eight race with coxswain Matt Weston, stroke Ernesto Del Valle, Peter Schmidt, Kevin Rorabaugh, Chris Hillenbrand, Dylan Sigfried, Kameron Palagi, Andrew Burns and bow Peter Eyrich in the Joseph Greipp boat.
Following the varsity eight racing, the women's varsity four race will begin at 10:00 a.m. with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, Jill Skovran, Samantha Cowan, Brogan Piecara and Brianna Simmers competing for Drexel. For the women's second varsity eight, Director of Rowing Paul Savell will send out the John A. Daskalakis boat with coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Natasha Martines, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Chloe Swansen, Asiya Mahmud and bow Brooke Wertan. The boat is scheduled to race at 10:30 a.m.
Drexel's men's novice eight, in the Peggy Greenawalt, will be entered in the second varsity eight competition at 10:45 a.m. with coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Justin Browne, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Paul Wisniowski, Zach Antunes and bow Adam Cordi. Joining them in the race will be the Dragons' "B" squad in second varsity eight racing. Coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Nick Buyse, Kyle Fabel, Mike Golden, Mike Gartland, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Liam O'Neill and bow Greg Pierce will be in the Vince Vidas boat.
The dual will close with more fours with the men's varsity four competition starting at 11:00 a.m. Varsity eight coxswain Matyas will join Ernesto Del Valle, Chris Hillenbrand, Kevin Rorabaugh and Peter Schmidt in the "A" boat while coxswain Arlynn Katz, Nick Jensen, Scott Nordsiek, John Luciani and Corey Barnes will race in the "B" boat. The Dawn Byers boat will be featured in the final race of the day, the women's novice four, with coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, Amanda Dargay, Elise Panacek, Mairin McKinlay and Danielle Frigerio.
