ACHIEVE Center & Dragon Lounge
The ACHIEVE (Athletes & Coaches having an impact on Education, Volunteerism, and Employment) Center provides a comprehensive support program for all current Division I Varsity Student-Athletes which includes academic development, leadership development, personal development, career development, and civic engagement opportunities. We further support the coaching staff and administration by keeping them well- informed of student-athletes' academic progress and well-being.
The ACHIEVE Center is charged with ensuring our student-athletes are making academic progress toward their degree and ensuring that our student-athletes are in compliance with the NCAA Academic Eligibility Requirements. We are also charged with organizing and facilitating programs that will enhance the total development and experience of our student-athletes.
Core Values
Commitment to Academic Achievement: To support the academic progress of the student-athlete toward intellectual development and graduation. The primary focus of the ACHIEVE Center is the monitoring of student-athletes' academic progress as well as providing academic support for all student-athletes. A wide array of retention efforts exist and the ACHIEVE Center collaborates with faculty, college advisors and other campus resources to achieve these goals. The commitment to academics is exemplified in the academic resources and programs offered by the Center including advice and advocacy as well as providing an exclusive center specifically for student-athletes.
The ACHIEVE Center provides academic coaching to student-athletes. During the academic coaching sessions, student-athletes and their academic coach work together to examine their learning styles, study habits, and potential obstacles to academic success. The goal is to develop academic awareness and develop strategies to achieve academic success. The strategies we utilize will depend on the needs of the student-athlete. Strategies include but are not limited to: time management, organizational skill development, study skill development, problem solving skills development. ACHIEVE Center staff members have a tool kit of academic strategies that they can utilize to best serve the needs of the student-athlete they are coaching. We also provide drop in services for student-athletes who have a quick question or may need only one individualized academic coaching session. We also collaborate with our campus partners: Counseling Center, Office of Disability, Writing Center, Math Resource Center and other department based tutoring centers.
Commitment to Athletic Leadership: To inspire a culture of positive leadership. Drexel student-athletes are encouraged to maximize their leadership skills through participation in sports, Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), Dragon Leadership Academy (DLA), Department Committees and other venues. SAAC is an integral aspect of the effective leadership of our department. The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) represents the ACHIEVE Center's commitment to athletic leadership on the court and in the classroom. Student-athletes are given leadership opportunities through services on the board as well as in their community. Their role is to act as positive agents of change and primary liaisons with the Athletic Department administration, representing the issues and concerns of all their peers. Drexel Athletics puts the student-athletes at the forefront when making a decision on athletic issues.
Fall of 2015, the ACHIEVE Center started the Dragon Leadership Academy. The program is a two-year program for sophomores and juniors. The framework for the program is "I listen; I learn then I lead." Year one is structured around using StrengthsFinder assessment to discover your strengths as a leader. Programming is based on self-reflection and evaluation. Year two is structured around learning strategies to improve your strengths. Programming is focused on employing strategies to utilize as team leaders facing conflict and challenges. After the two-year training, we expect that our student-athletes will applied what they learned to become effective leaders on their teams, in the athletic department and our community.
Commitment to Personal Growth: To support the development of a well-balanced lifestyle for student-athletes, encouraging emotional well-being, personal growth and decision-making skills. The ACHIEVE Center staff consults with student-athletes on a number of issues (time management, stress management, study skills, motivation, decision-making and goals, and other life skills). We structure our programming around the needs and the concerns of the student-athletes.
Commitment to Career Readiness: To encourage the student-athlete to develop and pursue career and life goals. Drexel Athletics works closely with the staff of the Steinbright Career Development Center (SCDC) to maximize the opportunities for career readiness. Our strong career education component differentiates Drexel from most other Division I student-athlete experiences. The ACHIEVE Center works closely with the SCDC Athletic Liaison to set Co-op cycles and prepare athletes for Co-op and life after college. Speakers are brought in to answer questions on getting a job, interviewing, or general career questions and the Career Connections Network offers a more personalized approach to career mentoring. The goal of this network is to connect current student-athletes with alumni athletes or friends of Drexel Athletics who are willing to provide valuable insight about careers and life after college athletics. Athlete Alumni and friends act as mentors to current Drexel student-athletes and communicate through e-mail, phone or in person.
Commitment to Civic Engagement: To engage the student-athlete in service to his/her campus and surrounding communities. Student-athletes collaborate with other campus organizations and student groups to maximize community outreach and strengthen campus partnerships.
The Dragon Lounge open its doors on January 18, 2017. The Dragon Lounge was made possible through the generation donation of John '67 and Jinnie Chapel. The student-athlete fueling station is housed in the Dragon Lounge. The Sports Dietitian manages the fueling station in collaboration with the University's Center for Nutrition and Performance.
