PHILADELPHIA – Despite recording a game leading five saves on the afternoon, Drexel dropped a tough 1-0 loss to Longwood in its season opener at Buckley Field.
Both teams battled defensively through the first 30 minutes, holding each other scoreless in the first half. Newcomer Hannah Nihill attempted to kick start the Dragons offense early on, leading the way with three shots before the half.
The Lancers gained momentum in the 38th minute, forcing their fourth of six total corner opportunities of the day. Longwood's Kolbey Donahue fired a shot in from the top of the circle and caught a left corner rebound off the pads of goalie Megan Hadfield.
In an effort to find the Lancers defense off-guard, the Dragons pulled Hadfield from the net with a minute and a half left in the fourth for an extra attacker on offense. The Lancers found a breakaway opportunity, but junior Amber Brouwer came up big with a defensive save inches from the goal line. The play was called for a Longwood penalty corner and opened the door for their second goal of the day with the Dragons still without a goalie. Drexel's defense proved resilient once again, warding off another shot fired on net, keeping it a one-goal game.
Drexel will return to home turf on Sunday afternoon to face neighboring Temple University at 12 p.m.
