Philadelphia – Drexel field hockey dropped a 1-0 decision to seventh-ranked James Madison in a Colonial Athletic Association game played at the Dragons' Buckley Field. The win moved the Dukes to 8-2, 3-0 CAA on the year while Drexel fell to 5-6, 1-1 CAA.
The Dukes opened the game with a couple of shots on goal that Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew turned away. Moments later, senior midfielder Sarah Gostomski hit Christina Mastropaolo with a cross-field pass. The freshman dribbled into the arc and fired a reverse shot that beat James Madison goalie Kelsey Cutchins. The ball struck the inside of the post and caromed in front of the goal but did not find its way past the line. Mastropaolo caused fits for the Dukes' defense all night firing three of Drexel's six shots on the night. Twelve minutes after the Mastropaolo shothit the post, Melissa Stefaniak fired a shot that found Meghan Bain alone at a post where she finished the play for the game's only goal.
The James Madison offense kept Drexel busy all night as Colleen McAndrew made 10 saves including several that forced the junior to break-up breakaway opportunities for the Dukes. Cutchins made four saves in goal for James Madison. For the game the Dukes outshot Drexel, 15-6, and outcornered the Dragons, 7-2.
The Dragons return to CAA action on Sunday as Drexel hosts Virginia Commonwealth at 1:00 p.m.
