Women’s Rowing Finishes Runner-Up at CAA Championships; Savell Named Coach of the Year
5/19/2019 12:34:00 PM | Women's Rowing
Drexel got wins from the Varsity 8 and Varsity 4 but Northeastern finished second in both of those races while the Huskies also won the 2V8, as the Dragons came in fourth, which gave Northeastern a two-point edge for the title. NU had 26 points to Drexel's 24.
Following the third varsity eight race, the five conference schools (Delaware, Drexel, Eastern Michigan, Northeastern, Villanova) entered into the point-scoring races (varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four).
The Dragons got off to a good start as the Varsity 4 won with a time of 8:01.388. Northeastern took second at 8:03.983 and Villanova came in third at 8:04.118. Drexel led from start to finish in the race but the Huskies and Wildcats were able to close the gap in the final 500 meters which led to a photo finish for second and third.
In the penultimate race, Drexel lost some ground with a four-place showing. Northeastern (6:57.607) won the event followed by Eastern Michigan (6:59.236) and Villanova (7:00.402).
Heading into the final race, the varsity eight, Drexel needed to win and have Northeastern finish outside of the top-2 to win their first conference title since 2005. The Dragons (6:42.591) led the entire race, finishing over a boat length ahead of the second-place finisher, which turned out to be the Huskies (6:46.557).
Two wins at the CAA Championships were not enough as Drexel earned 24 points, just one behind Northeastern's 26, who grabbed the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships.
