Drexel Field Hockey will travel to Virginia for two key conference games as the 18th-ranked Dragons will face the two teams tied atop the Colonial Athletic Association standings. On Friday, Oct. 1 at 6:00 p.m., Drexel will face VCU (7-3, 2-0 CAA) before traveling to James Madison (6-5, 2-0 CAA) for a Sunday showdown at 1:00 p.m. The Dragons are 15-2 in their last 17 conference games dating back to the 2008 season; they are 0-2 against James Madison and 15-0 against every other opponent. Drexel's high-powered offense will be tested as the Dragons face the conference's top two goalies in goals against average and save percentage on the road trip.
The 2010 Preseason Player of the Year Christina Mastropaolo has been key in the Dragons' current three-game winning streak. The senior forward has six goals in the last three games while breaking the program's record for career goals and points. Classmate Susan Ciufo has also been instrumental with a goal and three assists during the streak. She now has four goals and four assists on the season while taking a team-high 40 shots. All three of the Dragons' losses have come to teams ranked in the top 10 while Drexel is a perfect 6-0 against every other opponent this season.
VCU has been one of the conference's biggest surprises so far this season. The Rams were picked to finish eighth of nine teams in the CAA Preseason Poll but have had a big start to the conference season. On Sept. 24, VCU dropped Delaware, the reigning CAA Champion, in double overtime, 2-1, as Kelsey Scherrer scored less than three minutes into the second extra session. Two days later, Scherrer scored twice in the second half to propel the Rams to a 2-0 victory over Towson. Earlier in the season, VCU held Princeton, who sports the nation's top-ranked offense, to just three goals and kept the Tigers off the board for the final 45 minutes of the game in a 3-1 defeat. In addition to Scherrer's heroics, the Rams have been led by Erin Jablonski. The goalie is second in the CAA with a 1.42 goals against average and a .772 save percentage.
James Madison enters the weekend riding a three-game winning streak after a tough start to the season. After defeating Longwood to begin the streak, the Dukes outlasted Towson, 3-2, before an offensive explosion led them past Delaware, 7-1. James Madison featured a tough non-conference schedule that saw the Dukes fall to nationally ranked opponents, Louisville, Duke, Michigan State and American University this season. Amy Daniel currently leads the conference with 12 goals and 28 points with three of her 12 scores registered as game-winning goals. Margo Savage tops the league with a 1.32 goals against average and a .795 save percentage.
