Philadelphia - The Drexel Field Hockey team defeated Old Dominion for the first time in program history, 3-0. In the previous seven meeting the Lady Monarchs outscored the Dragons, 34-2, but on this day the Dragons dominated. Senior co-captain Colleen McAndrew posted her first shutout of the season in goal. Carolina Gibernau contributed a goal and an assist while Kim Tunell posted a pair of assists. The win moved the 17th-ranked Dragons to 11-3 and 4-1 in the CAA while Old Dominion, who had been ranked in top 10 earlier this season, fell to 6-7, 4-1 in the CAA.
Old Dominion threatened immediately after the opening whistle as the Lady Monarchs earned a pair of penalty corners. The first was blocked by Kim Tunell while Old Dominion was unable to generate a shot on the second. The Dragons settled down and were able to create opportunities of their own. Tunell fired a shot off a penalty corner that was turned away by Kelly Driscoll. Finally, the Dragons broke through as Carolina Gibernau sent a ball from the right side of the arc to Amanda Kicera in the middle. Kicera was surrounded by defenders and appeared to be unable to get a shot off. The senior co-captained reversed her stick and lifted the ball into the top right corner of the goal past a frozen Driscoll. The Lady Monarchs almost answered when a centering pass found the stick of Kathleen Shea at point-blank rangs. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew anticipated the play and stuffed the deflection and the ball was sent clear to a Drexel defender. Minutes later, Katie Ueberroth collected a loose ball in the middle of the arc and fired a shot that McAndrew turned away with her left leg. Just before halftime, Drexel struck again, this time on a penalty corner. Tunell sent a ball to Susan Ciufo who fired a shot into the right side of the cage. The goal was Ciufo's first in four games after recording a goal in eight straight games.
After halftime, Drexel continued to put pressure on the Lady Monarchs and controlled the ball in the offensive zone for the majority of the half. Drexel added an insurance goal on a shot from Gibernau off of a free hit taken by Tunell. Following the goal, Old Dominion pulled Driscoll and played with an extra attacker but were unable to generate another shot the rest of the half. For the game, Drexel outshot Old Dominion, 20-7, and earned nine penalty corners to the Lady Monarchs' four.
The Dragons will host Penn on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Buckley Field. Game time is 7:00 p.m.
