Varsity 8+ Takes Home Bronze Medal
CHERRY HILL, N.J. - The Drexel men's rowing captured the men's title for the fourth consecutive year at the Jefferson Dad Vail Regatta on Saturday morning. Both the men's and women's team won the overall championship for the second year in a row. The 3rd varsity 8+ and varsity 4+ took home gold as five Drexel boats recorded podium finishes.
All eight boats competed in Grand Finals. The race schedule was adjusted due to impending weather in the afternoon.
The varsity 8+ team came short of taking their fourth straight victory at the Regatta. The Lois Krall IV boat of Derek Kaiser (Coxswain), Danilo Djokic (Stroke), Andrei Axintoi, Jakob Mauntel, Dearon Tufankjian, Illia Chykanov, Bartek Socha, Matthew Kennedy, and Kyle Brown (Bow) collected the bronze medal as Temple took the top spot. The young crew, which includes six freshmen, came across the line with a time of 5:47.483.
The 2nd varsity 8+ team posted the best time of the day, clocking in at 5:46.423. Luke Joseph (Coxswain), Ben Werber (Stroke), Willem Kirsch, Braeden Montgomery, Jono Andersson, Zach Key, Aidan Ionescu, John Little, and Andrew Manns (Bow) took Sandra Lee Sheller II to a second finish in a close battle with Temple and La Salle. All three teams fought within a seat from one another the majority of the way. The Dragons took the lead coming into the final 500 meters, but the Owls were able to pull back out front and take the trophy.
The 3rd varsity held the lead the entire way as DU won gold. Rowing in Krall III, Emma Houghton (Coxswain), Nemanja Sajatovic (Stroke), Kosta Petkovic, Samuel Lozek, Nick Foley, Maxwell Frey, Andrei Malis, Collin Gross, and Milo Epstein (Bow) finished with a time of 5:55.152, nine seconds ahead of La Salle.
The varsity 4+ team in Go Roe secured the second gold medal of the day. The Dragons came home with a time of 6:37.795 and was two second head of Washington College.
