Softball Splits Doubleheader Against Conference Leader, Delaware

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team split a doubleheader against the Delaware Blue Hens on Saturday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field. Delaware took game one, 8-0, but Drexel powered past the conference leaders in game two, 4-3.
 
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (2-15) started game one and went five innings. The senior punched out five batters in the effort.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Delaware scored its first two runs in the first inning on a home run to left center. In the fourth, Delaware capitalized on two errors to post six runs and end the game due to the mercy rule.
 
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (7-10) went seven innings and held Delaware to three runs. The senior made her pitches and pitched out of multiple jams that kept Drexel in front.
 
Mia Garza started the second game in left field and contributed the teams' biggest hit this season. The sophomore lifted a ball over the fence in left center to put the Dragons ahead in the sixth inning.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel opened the second game by pouring on three runs. Delaware made three errors that allowed Ashley Errico reach on a fielder's choice along with Devyn Demchak reaching on a fielding error by third base.
 
The Blue Hens entered the day as the conference leader in fielding percentage.
 
Delaware slowly climbed out of the 3-0 hole it put itself in to tie the game in the fifth inning. But, it did not hold for long. Garza cracked the biggest hit of the teams' season and of her career. The ball that went over the left center fence was Garza's first home run of the season.
 
WHAT'S NEXT
Drexel returns to the Drexel Softball Field on Sunday, April 16 to play the rubber match against Delaware. The game on Sunday is slated to begin at noon.
