Softball Falls in Day Two of Battle at the Beach

CONWAY, S.C. – The Drexel softball team competed in the second day of the Battle at the Beach tournament in Conway, S.C. The Dragons played Eastern Carolina in game one and then played the hosts, Coastal Carolina, in the nightcap. Drexel fell in game one, 4-3, and stumbled in game two, 11-2.
GAME ONE
Jessica Schable (0-2) started the first game of the day in the circle for Drexel and pitched 8.2 innings. The senior held the Pirates to one earned run and eight hits. Lindsay Nelson pitched produced the last out of the ninth inning.
Kalea Calugay hit in the leadoff spot for the Dragons and went 2-for-4. The freshman earned the first hit of her career in the third inning and also drove in an RBI.
Three different players tallied an RBI. Calugay in the third inning, Jackie Masone in the eighth inning and Savaanah Garcia in the ninth inning.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Eastern Carolina earned the first run of the game in the top of the third inning with a sac fly to right field. In the bottom of the third, Calugay hit a single up the middle to score Grace Abbonizio.
In the top of the eighth, the Pirates scored a run with a sacrifice fly to left center. In the bottom of the inning, Jackie Masone hit a deep fly ball to left field and scored the tying run, Ameryn Humble.
Eastern Carolina scored two runs in the top of the ninth to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth, Drexel trimmed at the lead. Garcia hit a single up the middle and scored Calugay. East Carolina stopped the Drexel rally at just one run to finish the game.
GAME TWO
Nelson (0-2) started game two on the rubber and Schable entered the game in relief.
Calugay continued swinging a hot bat. The freshman went 1-for-3 with a double and scored a run.
Both Lily Meuninck and Abbonizio went 1-for-2. Meuninck scored a run, while Abbonizio tallied an RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Dragons checked in first on the scoreboard. In the first inning, Calugay scored on a wild pitch. In the second inning, Abbonizio hit a single down the left field line and scored Meuninck. Coastal Carolina scored 11 unanswered runs.
Due to the mercy rule, the contest ended after five innings.
UP NEXT
The Dragons close the Battle at the Beach on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m. The Dragons will meet Colgate in a single game.
