Washington Drops 40 As Dragons Survive In Double Overtime

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Keishana Washington scored a career-high 40 points as the Drexel University women's basketball team survived double overtime to claim its 13th consecutive win, a 75-67 victory at William & Mary on Sunday afternoon.

BY THE NUMBERS
- Washington's numbers came on 14-of-26 shooting including five three-pointers. She is the only CAA player to play in at least 10 games this year that has scored in double figures in each of her games. It was also her seventh contest with 20 or more this season.
- It is the first 40 point game for a Drexel player since Gabriela Marginean posted 41 at Northeastern on January 28, 2010
- Her total is the second-highest in the Colonial Athletic Association this season.
- Mariah Leonard had her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
- Hannah Nihill also reached double figures with 12.
- It its Drexel's first multiple overtime game since March 1, 2019, also at William & Mary.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Already having a strong game with 22 points in regulation and five more in the first overtime, Washington took over in the second OT period. She scored the first 10 points of the second extra session for DU and eventually recorded 13 of the Dragons 17 points in the stanza.
- The majority of the points in the first overtime were scored at the line as both teams tallied seven with the game needing five more minutes.
- Drexel held a five point lead into the fourth quarter, but the Tribe went in front with 10 of the first 14 points in the final frame.
- A pair of free throws by Tessa Brugler gave Drexel a 51-49 lead with 55 seconds left before W&M tied it. Neither team was able to convert in its final possession as the game went into overtime.
- Washington got off to a hot start, hitting three of her first four shots including a trey in the opening three minutes as DU led 10-7 at the first media timeout, on its way to a 14-10 lead after 10 minutes.
- Things tightened up in the second as following a three from Washington that pushed the Dragons up 20-14, the Tribe netted nine in a row, taking a 23-20 lead.
- Drexel recovered, going on a 9-0 run of its own, forcing four William & Mary turnovers in the final four minutes of the half, giving DU a 29-23 at intermission.
- The third quarter lacked flow for either team, but the Dragons were able to maintain their lead as five different players scored in the frame.
