PHILADELPHIA – A three-goal second quarter sealed the deal for No. 20 Saint Joseph's University as they moved to a 7-2 victory over the Dragons. Drexel drops to 0-3 on the season and the Hawks improve to 2-1.
The Dragons got out early against the Hawks, taking a 1-0 lead only two minutes into the game. Isabel Jacobs set up a perfect pass into the circle from the Dragons end-line, allowing Avery Powell to grab her first goal of the season.
Drexel was able to maintain a one goal lead for much of the first half, but a dominant Saint Joseph's offense sank three unanswered goals in the final five minutes of the second quarter to take a 3-1 lead. The Hawks built off their momentum in the second half, recording their fourth goal of the afternoon on a rebound off the pads of Megan Hadfield.
The Dragons answered back in the third with a goal in the 40th minute. Amber Brouwer recorded her first goal of the season with an assist from Puk Thewessen on the Dragons second penalty corner opportunity to move Drexel back within two. Despite a strong effort, the Dragons couldn't ward off the Hawks offense, who drove forward for three more goals to secure a 7-2 victory.
Drexel will be back on home turf on Sunday, September 5 at 12 p.m. against neighboring La Salle University.
