Bonus Points Decisive in 19-16 Loss to Columbia

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Wrestling received wins from Nick Widmann, Ebed Jarrell, Michael O'Malley, Bryan McLaughlin and Sean O'Malley, but Columbia's three bonus-point victories made the difference in a 19-16 loss at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Friday night.
The Dragons (6-8, 2-4 Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association) took three of the first four bouts and led 10-3.
No. 31 Michael O'Malley kicked off the dual with a 13-5 major decision of Lennox Wolak at 174 pounds. The redshirt-freshman put in his work early, jumping out to a 12-0 lead after the first period. Of O'Malley's 13 victories this season, nine have garnered bonus points for the team.
Owen Brooks dropped a 6-2 decision at 184 pounds, but Drexel took the next two bouts.
No. 32-ranked McLaughlin scored a 6-3 decision victory over Sam Wustefeld at 197 pounds. McLaughlin scored a pair of takedowns and collected the riding time point while avoiding being taken down himself.
Sean O'Malley scored the final four points of the heavyweight bout to claim a 6-2 decision over Dan Conley. With the score tied at 2-2, O'Malley scored two points on a reversal in the second period and finished that frame on top. The grapplers started the third period on their feet, and O'Malley utilized some clever footwork for an insurance takedown with 50 seconds remaining in the match.
The Lions (5-3, 5-2 EIWA) won the next three bouts, collecting bonus points twice, to shift the balance of the match.
Antonio Mininno lost a close match with No. 28 Joe Manchio at 125 pounds, losing 3-2. Angelo Rini collected a technical fall at 133 pounds, and Chris Scorese followed with a major decision.
After seven bouts, Columbia led, 15-10.
Widmann kept the Dragons in the dual with a 6-1 decision over Andrew Garr at 149 pounds. Widmann scored a pair of takedowns and never trailed for his second-straight dual win at home.
A major decision loss at 157 put the Dragons in a six-point deficit, 19-13, with one weight class remaining.
No. 18 Jarrell hunted the would-be decisive pin at 165 pounds but could not turn the determined Riley Jacops. Jacops' stubborn defense saw him cautioned for stalling three times, but he accomplished his objective in the 7-2 decision loss to Jarrell.
The Dragons face a quick turnaround and a Monday night road dual at Old Dominion.
