PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel University field hockey team (1-7) fell to the Cal Golden Bears (3-6) by a final of 2-1 from Buckley Field on Sunday afternoon in the team's annual Play4theCure matchup. The Dragons were playing today's contest in support of Philadelphia's own Gretta Ehret, a local coach who was recently diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at the age of 32.

Sunday got off to a quick start as Drexel managed its first shot, off the stick of junior Chandler McFeeley, 53 seconds into the game. The Dragons then earned one of its three penalty corners almost right after. But a quick transition for Cal led to a Golden Bear goal on the other end in the opening minutes. A long pass from midfield made its way to Maddie Cleat who took a shot that deflected off Megan Rodgers for the goal, 1-0.
The Dragons evened things up with 8:35 on the clock in the second quarter as senior Katie Bagdon scored her third goal of the season. On a corner opportunity, sophomore Puk Thewessen took a shot from the top of the circle that Bagdon was able to tip above Cal's goalkeeper, 1-1.
Drexel managed those two shots and two penalty corners in the first half compared to Cal's six shots and two corners, with the game tied, 1-1.
Heading into the fourth quarter, the Golden Bears took a 2-1 edge as Cleat scored on a pass from Rodgers with just under 13 minutes to play.
Drexel's McFeeley had a great chance to tie it back up with 8:25 to go. The junior beat the Cal goalkeeper, Natalie Dalton, but as she took her shot, Megan Connors of the Golden Bears came diving across in front of the cage to make a defensive save at the post.
About four minutes later, the Dragons pulled their goalkeeper Megan Hadfield in favor of the extra field player for the final 4:17 of regulation.
Drexel's Amber Brouwer made a defensive save of her own to keep the affair at 2-1 with 2:45 left.
McFeeley then had back-to-back shots that were saved by Dalton with under two minutes to play, which came as the Dragons' last scoring opportunity.
The game ended as Cal earned three penalty corners with under a minute, with the 2-1 decision remaining in favor of the Golden Bears.
