PHILADELPHIA –The Drexel rowing team won four gold medals Saturday at the 52nd annual Kerr Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The regatta, which Drexel Rowing hosts in conjunction with Drexel Alumni, is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Kerr, the founding coach of Drexel Crew and former team physician. Saint Joseph's won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup, while Rhode Island took home the Lela Kerr Cup.
The Dragons won four gold medals on the day, getting victories from the men's second varsity eight, women's varsity four, men's third varsity eight and the women's third varsity eight. The men's second varsity eight, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat raced a tight one down the final 500 meters with San Diego and came out ahead by 1.9 seconds with a final row of 6:29.00. The women's varsity four continued its dominant season in the Diane Corle boat, winning by open water with a time of 8:13.70. The third varsity eights earned the Dragons' first medals of the day. The women's third varsity eight, racing in the Marlene Buckley II boat, raced the closest final of the day, finishing in 7:55.34 to come from behind to outlast Saint Joseph's by three-tenths of a second. The men's third varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall, cruised to a winning time of 6:36.31 to beat second-place Saint Joseph's by more than six seconds.
Drexel also got second-place times from the women's varsity eight, women's second varsity eight, men's freshmen eight and men's freshmen four. The women, which had won the Lela H. Kerr Cup seven of the last nine years, raced a time of 7:18.98 in the Alleva XVII boat, but Rhode Island rowed a strong 7:10.98. The women's second varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, also could not overcome Rhode Island, finishing in second by five seconds with a 7:25.23. The men's freshmen eight, racing in Joseph Greipp boat, ran out of water to close the gap on Temple, finishing less than two seconds behind the Owls with a 6:42.06. The men's freshmen four, racing in the LeBow College of Business boat, finished second to Delaware by just over two seconds with a final time of 7:32.73.
The men's varsity eight, which had won the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup seven years in a row, finished sixth overall. Saint Joseph's won with a time of 6:12.29.
The Dragons will return to the Schuylkill River the following Saturday, April 21, to compete at the Bergen and Kelly Cups, the unofficial city championships hosted by Saint Joseph's.
History & Origins
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931. Lela Kerr, Dr. Kerr's wife, passed away in January 2018 at the age of 99.
