Rowing WV8 Wins Seventh Straight Kelly Cup Saturday Morning

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel women's varsity eight won its seventh straight Kelly Cup title Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River at the Bergen and Kelly Cups hosted by Saint Joseph's. The Dragons also got victories from the men's second varsity eight and women's varsity four.
The Dragons' women's varsity eight retained the Kelly Cup in the Alleva XVII boat by narrowly edged Temple by six-tenths of a second with a time of 6:29.86. The men's second varsity eight, racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, rowed to a winning time of 5:50.40, narrowly besting Temple by nine-tenths of a second. The women's varsity four then remained undefeated in the Diane Corle boat with a winning time of 7:17.4.
Drexel also took second-place times in the women's second varsity eight, men's third varsity eight and the men's varsity four. The women's second varsity eight, racing in the Cara Fry boat, took second with a time of 6:34.2, as Temple narrowly came out ahead. The third eight, racing in the Lois Krall boat, finished with a 5:59.9, 1.9 seconds behind Saint Joseph's. The men's B four, racing in the Oxholm, took second with a time of 6:50.65, behind the Hawks by less than a second.
The Dragons' men's varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall II boat, finished third. Saint Joseph's won the Bergen Cup for the second straight year.
Following Saturday morning's racing, the Dragons return to action April 28 with the men against Columbia LWT at Overpeck Park and on April 29 with the women at Eastern Sprints on Lake Quinsigamond.
