PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel field hockey team (2-3) grabbed its second win of the season on Sunday afternoon in North Philadelphia as the Dragons took down the Temple Owls (1-5) by a final 3-1 at Howarth Field.
Senior captain Jessica McCarthy notched the first goal of the game 24:35 in after the Dragons earned one of five corners of the first half. McCarthy's goal came on the team's fourth corner after fellow senior Idrienne Walker inserted the ball. Walker recorded an assist on the play as Drexel took the 1-0 lead.
Roughly six minutes later at 30:07, Temple evened the score as Hattie Kuhns put back a rebound on a penalty corner opportunity for the goal, 1-1.
Walker got a goal of her own with under a minute to play in the first half. On the fifth corner, Walker inserted and after an initial McCarthy shot, Walker tipped it in to put the Dragons up, 2-1. Her goal would come as the eventual game-winner as the two teams went scoreless for a majority of the second half. McCarthy was credited with an assist on the play.
The Dragons secured the game in the closing moments of regulation when Temple was playing with a kicking back. Drexel put together another goal off a penalty corner with 1:11 remaining as sophomore Megan Wiest scored the goal while fellow sophomore Amy Ferguson earned her first assist of the campaign.
Wiest now has a team-best three goals on the year while Walker and McCarthy each have two apiece. The assists both came as the first for Walker and Ferguson and McCarthy's team-leading fourth, a figure that is also tied for tops in the conference.
Redshirt junior Alison McCardell made a defensive save on the afternoon.
Sophomore goalkeeper Erin Gilchrist (W, 2-3) made her fifth start of the season and secured her second win behind nine saves and only one goal allowed.
Drexel lead corners, 10-9, while the Dragons and Owls were even on shots, 15, and shots on goal, 11.
The Drexel Dragons will now gear up for a cross-country trip to California. The squad will play at Cal on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at UC Davis on Friday, Sept. 16 and at Pacific on Sunday, Sept. 18.
