Crew Wins Bergen and Kelly Cups Saturday Morning on Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA – Drexel men's crew won the Bergen Cup Saturday morning on the Schuylkill River in the event hosted by Saint Joseph's. Drexel women's crew won the Kelly Cup and the Dragons won six races overall on the day.
The men's varsity eight won the Bergen Cup for the sixth year in a row and seventh time in the last eight years, while the women's varsity eight won the Kelly Cup for the fifth year in a row and seventh time in the last eight overall. The women's varsity four, men's varsity four, men's freshmen eight and men's third varsity eight boats also won.
Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, the 14th-ranked men's varsity eight crossed the finish line with a Bergen Cup-winning time of 5:31.7, which was 7.5 seconds faster than second-place Temple. The women's varsity eight preceded with a Kelly Cup-winning time of 6:24.3 to best second-place Temple.
Also a winner, the women's varsity four continued its impressive season. Racing in the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, the four finished with a 7:23.1 to outlast Temple's 7:26.5. The men's varsity four, which raced in the LeBow College of Business boat, won with a time of 6:35.4 to beat Villanova by 1.2 seconds. The Dragons won their first races of the morning when the men's freshmen eight, racing in Joseph Greipp boat, rowed to a sub-six 5:53.3 to win by more than five seconds, while simultaneously the men's third varsity eight, in the Annette Pennoni boat, took first against the other three-Vs with a time of 6:06.4.
In addition to the six wins, four other Drexel boats recorded top-three finishes. The men's second varsity eight, in the Lois Krall boat, raced the closest race of the day, finishing just two-tenths of a second behind Temple's winning time of 5:51.8. Drexel women's varsity eight finished third in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a final time of 6:44.6, which was less than five seconds off of Temple's winning pace and half a second behind second-place Saint Joseph's.
The Dragons' men's freshmen four, which raced in the Oxholm boat, earned the team's first top-three finish of the day, taking third with a 7:04.6. In the very next race, Drexel's women's freshmen eight rowed the Maria Papadakis boat to a third-place time of 7:06.3.
Up next, men's crew will travel to New York to take on Columbia on Saturday, while women's crew returns to action on Sunday in Massachusetts at the Eastern Sprints.
