Crew Sweeps Season Opening Races Saturday on the Schuylkill vs. Villanova and La Salle

PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel Crew swept Saturday's races against Villanova and La Salle on the Schuylkill River to begin the 2016 spring season.
The Dragons took home wins in all eight of the categories they entered in the season-opening races against the Wildcats and Explorers.
Saturday began with the racing of the varsity eights, and Drexel's eights prevailed. In the men's race, the Drexel A, in the Lois Krall boat, took first with a 6:10.00, while the next closest boat was the Drexel B in the Joseph Greipp boat with a 6:27.43. On the women's side, the Dragons took home the race in the Marlene Buckley II boat with a winning time of 7:10.97.
Drexel continued its success with wins at the second varsity eight level as well. The Dragons' women's second varsity eight beat Villanova with a 7:25.00 in the Maria Papadakis boat, while the men's Drexel A, in the Greenawalt boat, beat the Drexel B, in the Class of 1972 boat, in a head-to-head match, 6:50.70 to 7:05.09.
To close out racing in the eight-oar boats, the women picked up two more victories. In the third varsity eight, the Dragons' women picked up a win over Villanova in the Marlene Buckley boat with a time of 7:39.80. The women's freshmen eight also grabbed a victory with a time of 7:51.70 over two Villanova boats in the John Daskalakis boat.
The day closed with the men's varsity four race where the Dragons paced both the Wildcats and the Explorers. The Drexel A, in the LeBow boat, finished with a 7:19.20, while the Drexel B finished second in the Sheller boat, crossing the finish line with a 7:23.04.
The Dragons will return to the river on March 26 after final exams at the Murphy Cup.
