PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Crew had a strong showing Saturday on the Schuylkill River at the 34th annual Murphy Cup Regatta, taking home four gold medals on the day.
The Dragons earned gold medals in the Temple University-hosted event from the men's varsity eight, the men's second varsity eight, the men's third varsity eight and the men's freshmen eight. Drexel's women's varsity four also medaled, winning the bronze.
In the Sandra Lee Sheller II boat, the men's varsity eight showed it was already in mid-season form, racing to a 5:47.04 to beat second-place Temple by nearly five seconds. The top boat was preceded by the second varsity eight in the Lois Krall boat, which also beat second-place Temple, this time by just over 2.5 seconds with a 5:54.09 in the grand final.
The men's third varsity eight went straight to the finals with only six boats in the field and blew away the competition by almost six seconds. In the Peggy Greenawalt boat, the Dragons raced to a 6:18.52 to grab the victory. Finally, in its first competition of the spring, the freshmen eight got off to a strong start by crossing the finish line with a gold-medal time of 6:14.40 in the Vince Vidas boat.
The Dragons also got a bronze medal from the women's varsity four. In the Sandra Lee Sheller boat, Drexel was outlasted by only two Navy boats in the finals. The Dragons kept pace with the second-place Navy B, finishing less than a second and a half behind.
Drexel advanced to the grand finals in three other events and one petite final as well. The men's freshmen four, in the Oxholm boat, finished fourth with a 7:35.08 as Delaware set the pace at 7:10.20. The women's second varsity eight, racing in the Maria Papadakis boat, finished sixth overall with a 7:07.13, while Navy won with a 6:57.45 time. Drexel's women's varsity eight, in the Marlene Buckley II boat, turned in a time of 6:58.51, good for sixth overall in its category. In the petite finals of the men's second varsity eight, the Drexel B racing in the Joseph Greipp boat finished second overall with a 6:17.75, behind just Wesleyan's 6:13.30.
The Dragons' schedule continues to ramp up following the Murphy Cup. The women will compete at the Philly Invite on April 2 then travel to Virginia for the Occoquan Sprints on April 3. Drexel's men will split, with some travelling to California for the San Diego Crew Classic on April 2-3 and others heading to Virginia along with the women for the Occoquan Sprints.
