Novice Eight and Second Varsity Eight Victories Headline Drexel's Murphy Cup Performance

Philadelphia - Drexel's men's novice eight and second varsity eight claimed victory in the final at the Murphy Cup Regatta as one of many of the the Dragons' boats that earned finals berths. Drexel's varsity eight took fourth in the final finishing behind Jacksonville, Temple and Williams. The Dragons' men's varsity four, novice four and pair also rowed their way to the finals.
The Dragons' novice eight, in the Peggy Greenawalt with coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Kam Palagi, Zach Antunes and bow Adam Cordi, won its preliminary heat over second-place Saint Joseph's by just 0.35 seconds with a time of 5:57.13. In the finals, the Dragons' defeated the Hawks once again but this time by more than three seconds with a time of 6:07.58. The second varsity eight in the Annette Pennoni with coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Ernesto Del Valle, Lorenzo Albala, Liam O'Neill and bow Pat McGann took the finals by 1.51 seconds over Temple's "A" boat with a time of 6:08.17.
Drexel varsity eight featuring coxswain Randall Lee, Aleksander Radovic, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Greg Pierce, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Nick Buyse and bow Jacob Sloan, took second in the preliminary heat behind eventual champion Jacksonville. The boat's time of 5:57.67 was good enough to earn a spot in the finals where the Dragons finished fourth with a time of 6:11.37 ahead of other finalists La Salle and Fordham.
Drexel's novice four, in the Dawn Byers boat with Matt Weston, Nick Jensen, Dylan Siegfried, Paul Wisniowski and Corey Barnes won its heat over second-place Pittsburgh with a time of 7:00.52 to book its place in the finals. The Dragons finished third behind La Salle and Colgate but ahead of New York Maritime B, Pittsburgh and Penn State with a time of 7:06.21, just over two seconds behind Colgate.
The men's pair of Andrew Burns and Peter Schmidt won its heat with a time of 7:23.87, nearly five seconds better than second-place Pittsburgh but were outlasted by Penn State and Pittsburgh in the final. Drexel's pair finished at 7:41.42 while the Nittany Lions took the title with a time of 7:32.12.
Drexel's varsity four, in the LeBow College of Business boat with coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Michael Golden, Peter Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and bow Brennan Haydon, finished third in the qualifying heat with a time of 6:55.07 and did not qualify for the finals.
