Philadelphia - Both Drexel's men's and women's tennis teams will face George Mason in the opening round of the CAA Tennis Tournament starting on Thursday, April 15. The Drexel women (8-6, 2-3 CAA) earned the number nine seed in the tournament and will face the eighth-seeded Patriots (21-8, 3-3 CAA) at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday. The men (6-7, 2-3 CAA) were dubbed the number eight seed and will also play George Mason (10-14, 1-4 CAA) at 9:00 a.m.
The contests are both re-matches of Drexel's dual meeting with the Patriots in Fairfax, Va. on April 7. On that day, the Drexel men defeated Mason 5-2 and the women lost to the Patriots 5-1. Both teams will be looking to advance in the tournament for the second season in a row, as last year the squads each defeated Hofstra in the opening round.
The Drexel women closed out their 2010 regular season schedule with a 4-3 loss at the hands of the rival Delaware Blue Hens on Friday, April 9 on Senior Day at the Drexel Courts. Gozde Unkaya and Sonja Stosic won at second and third singles and the Dragons also won two of three doubles matches to earn a third team point in the loss. In the Dragons' earlier meeting with George Mason, Gozde Unkaya was the only player to win on the singles side, she defeated Lindsay Gray in straight sets. But Zineb Hilali went three sets against Kiersten Pappas at first singles and Sonja Stosic fell to Allison Wingo in three sets at third singles. If the women advance they will face No. 1 William & Mary at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, April 16
The Drexel men also lost to Delaware in their regular-season finale on April 9. Bryan Nguyen gave Drexel its only point of the match with a win at fourth singles. Nikoloz Kurdadze and Manu Bajpai preserved their perfect 6-0 record in doubles matchplay with a win over Austin Longacre and Andre Vorobyov at first doubles. In Drexel's match against George Mason on April 7, a 5-2 win for the Dragons, the men won at second, third, fourth and fifth singles and first and third doubles to clinch the match. Nikoloz Kurdadze also went three sets against Jorge Osuna at first singles before falling and Alessandro Bozzo would take Arjun Sanghvi to a second set tiebreak before being edged at sixth singles. If the men advance they will face top-seeded Virginia Commonwealth on Friday, April 16 at 2:00 p.m.
The CAA Tournament will be hosted by Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. The championship will run from April 15 to April 18.
