Philadelphia - The Drexel field hockey team completed a historic regular season as the Dragons overpowered Towson, 6-1, to finish 16-3 overall and 6-1 in the Colonial Athletic Association. The win was the eighth in a row for the Dragons who will play the winner of the Old Dominion/Towson in the CAA Championship Semifinal on Nov. 8. The six goals were the most by a Drexel team in a conference game since the Dragons joined the CAA. The loss dropped Towson to 11-8 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Susan Ciufo opened the game's scoring as she converted a Carolina Gibernau pass for her 18th goal of the season. The score gave her 44 points on the season breaking the Dragons' single-season Division I scoring mark. It also extended her point-scoring streak to 19 games as she was the only player in Division I this season to record at least one point in every game her team played. Two minutes later, Kim Tunell converted on a penalty corner as assists were awarded to Christina Mastropaolo and Gibernau on the play. The assist was Gibernau's 12th of the season extending her single-season school record.
Towson's Christina Boarman finally put Towson on the board as she converted a penalty corner for her 20th goal of the season. Six minutes later, Ciufo added another goal as she tied the Drexel record for goals in a season with her 19th. Amanda Kicera earned an assist on the play. Seven minutes before halftime, Gibernau scored on a broken penalty corner on a Tunell pass. She added another goal less than 10 minutes into the second half when she picked up a loose ball in front and converted.
With eight minutes remaining, Amanda Kicera sent a free hit into the arc and the ball went untouched until Mastropaolo was able to slightly deflect it high into the cage. The goal was Mastropaolo's 10th in CAA action this season as she led the conference in that category.
Colleen McAndrew was solid again in the cage for the Dragons as the senior made four saves. Towson's Whitney Clugston also made four stops.
