Lewisburg, Pa. – Drexel Field Hockey shrugged off its first loss of the season earlier in the week to defeat a tough Bucknell team in overtime, 2-1. Sarah Gostomski (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) assisted on the Dragons' first goal and scored the game-winner in overtime. The win pushed Drexel's record to 6-1 while Bucknell dipped to 4-2.
Drexel scored the first goal of the game for just the third time this season when Gostomski sent a pass to Emily Horvat (Allentown, Pa./William Allen) in front of the cage. Horvat beat Bison goalie Emily Groendyke to give Drexel the lead. It appeared that the goal would be enough as Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) made seven saves to keep Bucknell off the scoreboard. With the game winding down, the Bison earned a penalty corner in what might be their last opportunity to tie the game. On the penalty corner, Bucknell's Amanda Faust lifted a shot into the upper left corner of the cage past McAndrew with just 41 seconds remaining in the contest to knot the score, 1-1.
While the momentum seemed to shift heading into the overtime period, Gostomski would once again rise to the occasion. The junior capitalized on the first Drexel offensive opportunity when she maneuvered around Groendyke and finished the play with the game-winning goal.
For the game, Bucknell outshot Drexel, 9-6, and held a 7-5 advantage in penalty corners. Groendyke made two saves for the Bison while McAndrew stopped seven in earning her sixth win of the season.
The Dragons will conclude its brief two-game road trip on Wednesday, Sept. 20 when they take on Temple at 4:30 p.m.
