Philadelphia – Drexel Field Hockey lost 3-0 to Penn in a non-conference game played at Buckley Field. With the loss, the Dragons fell to 6-9 this season while Penn improved to 6-7.
Drexel's starting lineup included a pair of Dragons making their first career starts. Amanda Wachter (Egg Harbor Township, N.J./Egg Harbor Township) and Amy Palilonis (Richboro, Pa./Council Rock) each made her first collegiate start. Drexel caught a bit of the injury bug as Casey Mouser (Havertown, Pa./Haverford) was unable to play in the game while Heather Bloemker (Warrington, Pa./Central Bucks East) was used sparingly.
Drexel generated the game's first few chances as Amanda Kicera (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) found Catherine Chiara (Mountain Lakes, N.J./Mountain Lakes) in the arc three times in the opening minutes but Chiara was unable to score. Penn scored the opening goal as Meghan Rose picked up a Drexel turnover and found an open Tracy Stratter as she slashed toward the cage. Stratter fired a shot past Colleen McAndrew (Bethlehem, Pa./Freedom) to give the Quakers the lead. Late in the first half, Nicole Black added to the Penn lead as she deflected a Jamie Calahan shot into the net to send the Quakers to halftime staked to a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Penn would again use a deflection to score as Stratter netted her second goal of the game as she tipped a Margaretha Ehret shot past McAndrew. Penn would hang on to win, 3-0.
For the game, Penn outshot Drexel, 12-11, though the Dragons held a 6-3 edge in penalty corners. McAndrew made nine saves in goal for Drexel while Penn goalie Elizabeth Schlossberg stopped seven in earning the shutout.
Drexel will return to Colonial Athletic Association action on Friday, Oct. 20 when the Dragons will face James Madison in Harrisonburg, Va. Game time is 5 p.m.
