Drue Nicholas Places Second Overall
SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. - The Drexel golf team ended the season by finishing in third place overall at the 2023 CAA Championships held at the Cotton Dike Course on Dataw Island. It was the third straight year the Blue and Gold had a top three finish. Junior Drue Nicholas shot seven-under par over the three days and finished second overall, earning CAA All-Tournament Team honors for the second straight season.
The Dragons started the day out strong and were even after nine holes as a team. The back nine proved to be a challenge on Tuesday. Nicholas and Griffin Mitchell were the only two Drexel players to shoot par or better on the back. Nicholas went two under on the back to finish his day at 69 (-3). He played each round under par during the event and became just the second Drexel player to finish in second place at a CAA Championship. Angelo Giantsopoulos tied for second back in 2021. Nicholas has now played six straight postseason rounds under par.
Mitchell and Tafadzwa Nyamukondiwa each closed the tournament with even par rounds (72). The teammates tied for 13th place overall at 220 (+4). UNCW tied a CAA record during the second round with a score of 15-under par and went on to win the title. The Seahawks were nine strokes better than Elon, who finished in second. Drexel ended the 54 holes at eight-over par (872). The Dragons were six shots ahead of William & Mary and the College of Charleston, who finished tied for fourth at 878. Drexel, Towson, Monmouth, North Carolina A&T and Hofstra rounded out the field.
