8/19/2021 6:29:00 PM | Women's Soccer
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Gabrielle Perrotto scored her first career goal to open the season for Drexel women's soccer, but the Dragons were upended 2-1 in overtime at Villanova on Thursday afternoon.
The opening minutes of the contest were played almost exclusively in the Drexel offensive half of the field. The Dragons owned the possession early, generating the first scoring chances of the match including a drive from distance off the boot of Annalena O'Reilly that clipped the crossbar in the fourth minute. Play leveled as the first half wore on, but the Drexel back line was up to the task, holding its form, coupled with some strong play in goal from Miyuki Schoyen.
After taking back momentum, DU scored its first goal of the season in the 36th minute off a free kick. Following a foul at midfield, the ball was sent into the attacking area where Casey Touey struck from the right side of the box. An initial save produced a rebound that was pounced on and tapped into the back of the net by Perrotto for a 1-0 lead.
The Dragons found themselves defending early on in the second half, but were able to turn away a trio of chances in a four minute span as Schoyen stood tall in net. Drexel maintained the lead into the latter stages of the period before the Wildcats tied the game with 21 minutes remaining. DU regained its footing, creating some chances in the waning moments of regulation as the match eventually went into extra time where Villanova scored five minutes in.
Overall Schoyen made six saves for Drexel.
The Dragons return to the pitch for the home opener against Lehigh on Thursday, August 26 at 6:00 p.m.
