PINEHURST, N.C. - Angelo Giantsopoulos fired an even-par 71 on Sunday and Connor Schmidt placed in the top five overall as Drexel concluded the 2019 CAA Championships at Pinehurst No. 8. As a team, the Dragons finished in sixth place. UNCW won the tournament finishing four strokes ahead of the College of Charleston.
The Dragons had a chance heading into Sunday's final round. Drexel trailed by just four strokes, but Sunday turned out to be a tough day for most members of the team. Schmidt was in the race for the overall title after an outstanding first 36 holes, but a triple bogey on number 14 took him out of contention. He still had a solid tournament, carding a 217 over the three-day event. The junior shot a five-under-par 66 on Saturday, which was the best round ever at a CAA Championship for a Drexel golfer. Schmidt finished the tournament tied for fifth overall and for the second straight year was named to the CAA All-Tournament team.
Giantsopoulos was steady all day. The sophomore birdied the second hole and stayed at one-under par until a bogey on nine brought him back to par. He proceeded to par the next nine holes to finish at even. Giantsopoulos finished the tournament at 221, eight-over par, and in a tie for 13th place.
Stephen Cerbara rebounded from a slow start on Sunday to shoot 76. The sophomore, playing in his first CAA Championship, played the final five holes in one-under par. Schmidt and Alex Butler each shot 79 on Sunday as the Dragons finished the day at 305.
