Raleigh, N.C. - The Drexel golf team closed the 2017-18 season with a third place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this weekend. The Dragons saved their best round for last as they shot a two-over-par 290 on the final 18 holes. The third place finish is the highest finish in the program's 17 years in the CAA. Connor Schmidt, Aaron Fricke and Alex Butler led the way with top 10 finishes for head coach Ben Feld's team.
Drexel finished the tournament by shooting 886 over the three day event. It is the program's second-lowest 54-round score at the CAA championships. The school record was set last season, when the Dragons shot 868 and finished in fifth place. This year's tournament was held at Lonnie Poole Golf Course, which is located on the campus of North Carolina State University. The Arnold Palmer design played at 7,358 yards from the championship tees. It is a par-72 course. In addition, Drexel's 290 was the second best finish of any team on Sunday, trailing only UNCW. The Seahawks shot a three-under par 285 on their way to the CAA Championship. The Colllege of Charleston finished second, two shots behind UNCW and just three shots better than the Dragons.
Drexel was led by Connor Schmidt, who has shown a knack for playing well in his two experiences at the CAA Championships. Schmidt was steady on Sunday as he shot a one-over-par 73 and finished at 218 (+2). That score was good enough for third place overall. Last season, Schmidt also led the Dragons in scoring at the Championships. Senior Aaron Fricke made a memorable last impression as a Dragon. After a 77 on Saturday, Fricke rebounded to shoot par on Sunday. He had three birdies in a row on 15, 16 and 17 before making par to close his stellar Drexel career. He tied for fourth overall. Both Schmidt and Fricke were rewarded by being named to the CAA's All-Tournament Team.
Sophomore Alex Butler had the best round of the day for any Dragon. Butler started off strong with birdies on four of the first five holes and finished the front at two-under par. He went even on the back and closed his final round with an impressive two-under par 70. Only one competitor shots better than Butler on Sunday. Butler, playing in his first CAA Championship, recorded a top 10 finish by shooting 220. He finished in a tie for sixth overall
Senior Adam Mistretta, in his final appearance as a Dragon, bounced back with a strong back nine on Sunday. After a double bogey on nine, Mistretta rebounded nicely to shoot one under on the back. He carded a 76 on the day and ended the tournament at 229, which gave him a top 20 finish. Brendan Bacskai closed the tournament by shooting four-over-par 76. The junior had a pair of birdies on the back nine, where he shot just one-over par. In his first CAA Championships, Bacskai finished the tournament with a 235.
"I'm so proud of these guys," said Feld. "This group worked so hard this whole year and their toughness showed this week on a difficult golf course. We knew we could be right there, but this week only adds to our belief that we will win a CAA Championship in the coming years. I'm so proud of our seniors Aaron and Adam. Both of those guys have poured their hearts into this program the past few years and I'm honored to have been able to coach them."
Michael Sass of Charleston was the medalist. He fired a three-under-par 213 to win the award. Sass finished two shots ahead of UNCW's Blake McShea who finished at par. Schmidt finished alone in third place.
