Midlothian, Va. - The Drexel golf team finished the 2016-17 season with a fifth-place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships this morning. Drexel shot four-over-par 868 over the 54 holes. That was by far the best scoring finish the Dragons have had since joining the CAA. The previous 54-hole low was 891 in 2004.
The Dragons were under par after two rounds, but played the first half of the third round in rainy conditions on Saturday. Play was called and the teams finished their final round on Sunday morning. The scores reflected those difficult conditions as every team shot a worse score in the third round than in the second. In face every team except Charleston saw its third round score increase by at least five strokes.
Drexel finished its third round at 297, leaving it comfortably in fifth place, eight strokes behind James Madison and six shots in front of Delaware. Charleston was the overall winner at 23-under-par, a full 13 shots better than second place UNCW. Towson finished third. Elon, William & Mary and Hofstra rounded out the field.
Connor Schmidt, despite a tough third round, led the way for the Dragons with an impressive one-over-par 217 in his first CAA Championship. Mike Cook and Adam Mistretta each managed to shoot par in round three for Head Coach Ben Feld's squad. Mistretta finished the tournament at two-over-par, while Aaron Fricke was one shot in back of him. Cook and Yoseph Dance completed the 54 holes at 220. It was the final appearance as a Dragon for Dance. The senior had an outstanding career representing the Blue and Gold on the course, in the classroom and on campus. Dance won last year's "I Am a Dragon Award," given to the Drexel student-athlete who embodies what it means to be a Dragon and was also the SAAC Service Award winner.
Dance, Scott Forrester and Brian Fischer are the three seniors on this year's squad who suited up for the final time as student-athletes at Drexel this spring. All three sport grade-point averages above 3.3, have served as outstanding representatives of the team and will be missed next season. The Dragons will return four of their top five scorers from this season in the fall.
