Rider Edges Wrestling on Saturday Night, 18-16

LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – The Drexel wrestling team was edged by Rider, 18-16 in dual action on the road on Saturday night. Drexel led after the first five matches, but then Rider won four of the last five to overtake the Dragons and go on to victory.

The dual started with the 125 match, where Rider's J.R. Wert secured a 2-1 decision over Zack Fuentes. No. 13 Kevin Devoy Jr. got the Dragons on the board with a 3-2 victory over Anthony Cefolo at 133, which evened the score at 3-3. David Pearce followed with a 4-0 win over Evan Fidelibus at 141 and then No. 18 Matthew Cimato added a major decision over Jesse Rodgers at 149 to put Drexel ahead 10-3 four matches in.

No. 20 B.J. Clagon started the Broncs' comeback with a 14-5 major decision over Willie Davis in the 157 match. At 165, fifth-ranked Chad Walsh gave Rider back the lead with a 12-3 major decision over Austin Rose. Dean Sherry added another extra-point win over Ebed Jarrell in the 174 match, which put the Broncs ahead, 15-10.

Alex DeCiantis cut Rider's advantage to 15-13 as he secured a 3-1 victory at 184. However, the Broncs' No. 13 Ryan Wolfe defeated Joshua Murphy at 197 to stretch the lead back to 18-13. No. 18 Joey Goodhart took a win in the heavyweight match, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit the Broncs had created.

With the loss, the Dragons move to 11-6 overall while Rider improves to 10-1 on the season. Drexel's record against conference opponents remains at 7-3.

The Dragons will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 18 when they will host Maryland at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Senior Night. Matches are set to begin at 7 p.m.
