Apalachin, N.Y. - The Drexel golf team set a school-record with an 11-under-par performance at the Matthews Auto Collegiate Invitational hosted by Binghamton. The Dragons tied for the top spot in the event, but Saint Bonavanture won the tiebreaker, which was decided by the score of the fifth player for each team. Drexel shot a 565 at The Links at Hiawatha Landing (par-72, 7,104-yard course), the best 36-hole score in program history.
Drexel freshman Connor Schmidt finished third overall at the tournament. The freshman went under par in each of the two rounds to finish with a seven-under-par 137. He was just two shots behind medalist Owen Quinn from Lehigh and Will Halamandaris from Lafayette. Drexel junior Adam Mistretta tied for fourth overall with a six-under 138.
Yoseph Dance bounced back on day two with a two-under-par 70. He finished at 145, just one stroke over par. Aaron Fricke shot a 146, while Brendan Bacskai rounded out the squad at 151.
As a team, the Dragons raw score of 565 was five shots better than the 570 the team shot in the fall of 2005 at the Keenan Invitational. The record is even more impressive when you consider this tournament was a par-72 course, while the Keenan course was a par 70. Drexel's 11-under par was the second-best score to par ever at the school. The 2005 team shot a 13-under 839 at the James Madison Inviational back in October of 2005.
