SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The Drexel women's soccer team fell to Syracuse on the road on Thursday evening, 3-2. Vanessa Kara and Madison Dunn scored for the Dragons, but the Orange ultimately walked away with the victory.
The game remained scoreless into the 40th minute. It was then that Syracuse jumped out to a 1-0 lead as Alex Lamontagne sent the ball into an open net after drawing Eve Badana out to challenge her. The Orange would take this 1-0 advantage into halftime.
Just two minutes after the second half began Drexel would retaliate as Kara scored her fifth goal of the season. The rookie received a pass from Jacki Sieder and was able to beat the keeper and put it into the net. Two minutes following that, however, Syracuse would take the lead again with another goal from Lamontagne.
In the 75th minute, the Orange extended their lead to 3-1 as Maya Pitts found the net for Syracuse for her third goal of the season. Down two goals with less than 15 minutes to play, the Drexel offense stepped up its game. Kylie Strong took a shot in the 78th minute, but it was brought down by Syracuse keeper Courtney Brosnan. Five minutes later, Nicolette Wilkins made a strong attempt that looked like it could have curved over the head of the keeper, but instead it found the crossbar. Dunn was there to find the rebound of Wilkins' shot, however, and put it back into the net to cut Syracuse's lead to just one goal with eight minutes to play.
The Dragons' late effort proved to be not enough as the clock ran out short of a Drexel comeback. Syracuse would ultimately edge out the Dragons, 3-2.
Syracuse outshot Drexel, 16-10 on the game. Badana tallied two saves on the night while Syracuse's Brosnan recorded three.
With the loss, Drexel moves to 6-3 on the season, while the Orange improve to 4-4-1.
The Dragons return to action next weekend when they will travel south to begin conference play. Drexel will first head to Wilmington, N.C. to take on UNCW on Friday, Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. before traveling to Charleston to face the Cougars on Sunday at noon.
