TOWSON, Md. – Drexel Tennis' women dropped only their second match of the year Saturday, a 4-3 loss to Towson on the road.
The Dragons are now 14-2 on the year. The 14 wins ties them for the most single season wins in program history.
"Towson has improved a lot and today we knew it was going to be a 4-3 match," head coach Mehdi Rhazali said. "We had a lead with the doubles point, but it wasn't enough. Our energy level could have been higher, and we needed to be a little bit tougher in important games and points. That affected us. We just need to fir these things for tomorrow's match. I'm sure the gils will do it and will bounce back."
Drexel began the match on a high note, jumping out to a quick start and sweeping the doubles point. Nicole Pivonka and Clary Rodriguez Cruz took a tough 8-6 match to improve their season mark to 17-4. Erin Bowsher and Ryshena Providence followed with an 8-6 win of their own in the second spot, and Lea Winkler and Kendra Bunch also added a win, an 8-5 victory.
The Blue and Gold faced a tough Towson singles lineup, and unfortunately the Tigers prevailed but not without a fight from the Dragons. Drexel took two of the six, but forced three sets in two others.
Pivonka dropped a tight three-setter, 2-6, 6-4, 4-6, followed by Bowsher's 4-6, 2-6 loss. Rodriguez Cruz continued her strong freshman campaign with a 6-4, 7-5 win to improve her singles record to 17-4.
In the back half of singles, Drexel needed to win two of the three matches to take the overall match. Winkler fought to a close three-set match, but fell, 4-6, 6-2, 1-6. Although Fiorella Coria nearly blanked her opponent in the No. 6 position, 6-0, 6-1, Providence fell at No. 5, 1-6, 1-6.
The Dragons return home for Senior Day Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. against Delaware with a chance to set the single season wins mark. Drexel Tennis will honor Pivonka and Aysenil Orhon on the women's side as well as Badr Ouabdelmoumen, Alex Fioravante, Daniel Hansen and Dan Koehler on the men's side.
