PHILADELPHIA – Drexel University and Drexel's Director of Rowing, Paul Savell, have added Nicholaus Baker as an assistant crew coach.
"We are extremely excited to welcome Nicholaus to be a part of the Dragons," Nick Gannon, Drexel's Deputy Director of Athletics, said.
Baker will fill in the void at assistant coach left by David Florio, who will now transition into a managing role at the Bachelors Barge Club, Drexel's boathouse. Florio will manage the daily operations and programs at the Bachelors Barge Club and will take on a large role in Drexel's management on the Schuylkill River. Florio is a 2006 graduate of Drexel and spent the last four seasons on the Dragons' crew coaching staff.
Baker makes his way to Drexel by way of Penn, where he was the head coach of the school's lightweight rowing program for five years. He led Penn's lightweight rowing to recent program highs at the IRA Regatta, Matthews-Leonard Cup, Dodge Cup, Callow Cup and EARC Sprints.
Prior to his time at Penn, Baker spent time as a head coach and assistant coach with Navy's lightweight rowing program and on the coaching staff at Yale. Baker is a 2001 graduate of the University of Buffalo where he was captain and president of the rowing team.
