Philadelphia – Following a historic performance by Drexel Rowing at the Dad Vail Regatta, Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer has announced that the program will send its men's varsity eight boat to the prestigious Henley Royal Regatta. The Dragons will compete in the event held on the Thames River in England, from June 27 - July 1. The trip is being made possible thanks to a generous donation from renowned philanthropists Herbert and Karen Lotman. “I am very proud of the accomplishments of the Drexel Crew,” Mr. Lotman said. “Coach Savell has done an outstanding job building an elite program and I am happy to help sponsor them on this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to row at the Henley.”
Director of Rowing Paul Savell guided the men's varsity eight to a bronze medal finish at the 2012 Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta and the team to a second place overall finish with 35 total points. As a unit, the men's varsity eight posted five first place victories this spring.
“Our men's heavyweight eight has had a very strong year and deserves to compete at Henley,” said Director of Athletics Dr. Eric Zillmer. “The recent experiences Drexel has had at the women's Henley have been fabulous and we are looking forward to lining up our first men's eight at the Henley Royal Regatta. This competitive initiative is also a perfect fit for Drexel's global reach in terms of engaging internationally. I also want to thank Mr. Lotman, a visionary in his own right, for his generous gift and his investment in our Henley dream.”
The men's varsity eight, in the newly named “Lois Krall” boat, will consist of coxswain Randall Lee, (Huntingdon Valley, Pa./ William Tennent), stroke Kurt Linton (Linwood, N.J./ St. Augustine Prep), Paul Wisniowski (Philadelphia, Pa./La Salle), Aleksandar Radovic (Smederevo, Serbia, Gimnazija Smederevo), Lorenzo Albala (Elkins Park, Pa./ Boston Latin), Sebastian Ryan (Brooklyn, N.Y./ Xavier), Vanja Busic (Zadar, Croatia/Gimnazija Juraj Barakovic), Michael Faust (Northfield, N.J./ St. Augustine Prep) and bow Will Masters (Somers Point, N.J./ Mainland Regional).
“The men's varsity eight has been steadily picking up speed through the season,” Director of Rowing Paul Savell said. “Their overall body of work this season has been at a high level with strong showings at the San Diego Crew Classic, the Knecht Cup and the Kerr Cup. As the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta approached, we had hopes set on winning medals with the possibility to move on and race at the Henley Royal Regatta in England.”
Qualifying races will begin on Friday, June 22 followed by a draw on June 23. The preliminary heats will take place on Wednesday, June 27 and Thursday, June 28. Heats and quarterfinals are also set for Thursday and Friday, June 29. Semifinals are scheduled for Saturday, June 30 followed by the finals on Sunday, July 1.
The Henley Royal Regatta has been held annually since 1839. The first regatta took place on a single afternoon, but by 1940 the event had become so popular that it was extended to two days. In 1986, the regatta became a five-day ordeal as the field of participants was increased. The Dragons will join the world's best rowing programs on the two-lane 2,000-meter course.
