Drexel Crew Earns Seven Grand Finals Berths in First Day of Racing at Knecht Cup

Camden, N.J. - Drexel Crew had a remarkable day on the Cooper River at the first day of racing at the Knecht Cup Regatta. The Dragons' men's pair, men's novice four, men's second varsity eight, women's second varsity eight, and men's novice eight will join Drexel's men's and women's varsity eight in grand final racing on Sunday. The banner day featured Drexel boats crossing the finish line first in 11 races on Saturday in preliminary and semifinal races.
Drexel opened the day with a resounding victory from the men's pair in the preliminary heat as Liam O'Neill and Peter Schmidt finished in 7:25.50 with the next fastest boat, Pittsburgh, crossing more than 29 seconds later. The win moved the pair to the semis where the duo once again dominated by finishing its semi with a time of 7:17.31 more than 12 seconds faster than any other boat in its semifinal and more than eight seconds faster than any other pair in a semifinal. The win sent the Dragons to Sunday's grand final where they will face Fairfield, Penn State, Mercyhurst, Pittsburgh and Colgate.
The Dragons' women's varsity four, in the Sandi Sheller boat with coxswain Caitlin Meehan, stroke Jill Skovran, Brianna Simmers, Brogan Piecara and bow Chloe Swansen, placed fifth in its heat with a time of 8:32.85 and did not advance to the semifinals. The men's varsity four in the Tobey and Kim Oxholm, occupied by coxswain Michelle Lehmann, stroke Michael Gartland, Peter Eyrich, Kevin Rorabaugh and bow Brennan Haydon, took fourth in its heat with a time of 7:21.00 to claim a spot in the petite final. The boat will face Pittsburgh, Lafayette, UMass, Dowling and Lehigh on Sunday. The men's novice four in the Dawn Byers boat with coxswain Matt Weston, stroke Nick Jensen, Dylan Siegfried, Paul Wisniowski and bow Corey Barnes won its heat with a time of 7:19.38 to clinch a spot in the semifinals where the Dragons continued to impress. A time of 7:13.88 was better than 11 seconds faster than second-place Carnegie Mellon as the boat booked a place in Sunday's grand final against Marietta, N.Y. Maritime, Mercyhurst, Colgate and Carnegie Mellon.
Drexel's women's varsity eight with coxswain Cate Khella, stroke Candice Webb, Dana Haneman, Julia Jackson, Mallory Sykes, Juliana DeMarici, Emily Coyle, Casondra Clawson and bow Mary Kain continued the Dragons' big day with a first-place showing in the preliminary heat at 6:39.76, more than three seconds faster than second-place Delaware. The victory moved the boat to the semis where the boat clinched a Sunday grand final berth with a second-place finish in 6:44.34 behind only Temple in its semifinal. The Dragons will join Buffalo, Boston College, Duke, Rutgers and Temple in the grand final.
The men's varsity eight with coxswain Randall Lee, stroke Aleksander Radovic, Kyle Fabel, Anthony Fittipaldi, Greg Pierce, Brian Timlin, Will Masters, Nick Buyse and bow Jacob Sloan also won its preliminary heat with a time of 5:52.96 as the Dragons just beat Virginia to the line. The Drexel boat finished just 0.14 seconds ahead of the Cavaliers. With the win, Drexel advanced to the semis where the boat repeated its morning performance by outlasting Marist by just 0.79 seconds to win the semifinal and reach Sunday's grand final. Drexel's time of 5:51.36 was the fastest semifinal time of all boats entered. The Dragons will face Temple, Virginia, Mercyhurst, Bucknell, and Marist for the title.
The Drexel women's second varsity eight in the Marlene Buckley boat with coxswain Alex Paulin, stroke Natasha Martines, Mollie Cusack, Alexa Antonioli, Jami Ruane, Colleen Owens, Samantha Cowan, Megan Bush and bow Asiya Mahmud won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:57.16 topping second-place Boston College by 1.23 seconds. The win moved the Dragons to the semifinal where the boat did just enough to stake its claim to a spot in the grand final. Drexel's time of 6:57.97 placed third to nab the final spot in Sunday's race against Buffalo, Temple, Rutgers, UMass and Duke.
The Annette Pennoni boat carried the second varsity eight on the men's side with coxswain Steve Matyas, stroke Filip Topalovic, Gregg Francis, Marty Khait, Chris Hillenbrand, Ernesto Del Valle, Lorenzo Albala, Michael Golden and bow Pat McGann also won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:06.29 to reach the grand final on Sunday. Drexel will face Hobart, Temple, Virginia, Bucknell and Fordham at 12:30 p.m.
The women's novice eight in the John A. Daskalakis boat with coxswain Mary Beth Geyer, stroke Amanda Dargay, Danielle Frigerio, Brogan Piecara, Lillian Reed, Leila Aboharb, Elise Panacek, Kathie Cheng and bow Mairin McKinlay took fourth in the preliminary heat just missing out on a spot in the semifinals with a time of 7:42.71. The men's novice eight in the Vince Vidas boat with coxswain Justin Malley, stroke Kurt Linton, Jason Browne, Tim Drake, Rylan Treffinger, John Kile, Kam Palagi, Zach Antunes and bow Adam Conti won its preliminary heat with a time of 6:13.45 in beating second-place Virginia by more than eight seconds. The boat continued with its momentum into the semifinal race where the Dragons won again, this time crossing more than four seconds ahead of second-place Bucknell. The Dragons will face Virginia, Saint Joseph's, Rutgers, Bucknell and Delaware on Sunday in the grand final.
