Philadelphia - Drexel University Head Women's Crew Coach Paul Savell has announced the signing of six student-athletes who will row for Drexel in the fall. Meredith Bracken, Sierra Baca, Natalie Moreira, Emma Howard, Emily Gartland and Olivia Babiec will be members of Drexel crew in 2011-12.
Two of the six members of the class are from Pennsylvania. Meredith Bracken is from Blue Bell, Pa. and attends Mount St. Joseph's Academy. Bracken sits seven seat of Mount's varsity-eight that placed fourth at the Head of the Charles last month in the Youth 8 category. In Bracken's junior year she won both the SRAA National Championship and Stotesbury Cup Regatta and continued on to a fifth place finish at the US Rowing Youth Nationals in Cincinnati, Ohio. Bracken edged out her new teammate Emma Howard of Bryn Mawr, Pa., who attends Radnor High School by less than two seconds at the SRAA National Championship in 2010. Howard's boat placed third at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta.
The next two members of the class reign from just over the bridge in New Jersey. Sierra Baca is a senior from Holy Spirit High School (Absecon). She has rowed in Holy Spirit's Varsity-eight for three years. In her junior year she posted sixth and fifth place results at the SRAA National Championships and Stotesbury Cup Regatta respectively. A fellow New Jersey native Emily Gartland is a senior at Haddon Township High School who brought home a silver medal at the SRAA National Championships and bronze at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta in the junior quad category.
The remaining two student-athletes who signed National Letters of Intent are Natalie Moreira, from Manhasset (N.Y.) High School and Olivia Babiec, who lives in Alexandria, Va., and attends Bishop Ireton High School. Moreira most recently placed 13 in the varsity-four category at the 2010 Head of the Charles Regatta and won back to back gold medals at the 2010 Frostbite and Bill Braxton Regattas. Babiec raced the junior 8 category in 2010. She led her crew to the most successful finish at Bishop Ireton to date by placing third in the semi finals at the Stotesbury Cup Regatta. Babiec, the tallest member of the incoming class at 6-0, continues to take on challenges such as racing the single in the Open Club Single category at this fall's Head of the Charles Regatta.
“We have the top seniors from the best programs in the region coming to our team next year,” Savell said. “Each one of these rowers will make an instant impact on our program.”
