Towson rallied from a 4-2 fourth quarter deficit to defeat Drexel, 7-4, at Vidas Field. The Tigers held the Dragons off the board for the final 26 minutes of the game and scored two goals on a man-up situation to take the lead.
The Dragons (4-5, 0-1) took a 4-1 lead with 11:17 to play in the third period when Adam Dennis rifled a shot past Towson keeper Rob Wheeler. It would be Drexel's last goal of the contest. Towson (4-4, 1-1) started its comeback three minutes later when Bill McCutcheon scored on an unassisted goal. The teams would go to the fourth quarter with Drexel ahead 4-2.
Neither team was able to score in the first seven minutes of play in the fourth, but Towson rattled off five goals in the last 7:39 of the game to earn Head Coach Tony Seaman his 250th career win. Scott Ruhl made it a one-goal game when he took a feed from McCutcheon and beat Drexel's Mark Manos for Towson's third goal of the day. The turning point of the game came 44 seconds later when Drexel's Matt McCormick was whistled for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty. The unreleasable penalty resulted in a pair of Towson extra-man goals as both McCutcheon and Pat Britton scored to give Towson its first lead of the game.
The Tigers added a pair of goals in the last 1:09 as Drexel pressed in an effort to get the ball back. Tim Stratton and Kyle Smedley scored to make the final score 7-4.
Drexel outshot Towson, 32-31, and grabbed 30 ground balls to 24 for the Tigers. Towson was able to win 10 of the 14 face-offs, including five of six in the final period. Colin Ambler had a goal and an assist for the Dragons. Joe Wojciechowski, Greg Casey and Dennis also scored for Drexel. McCutcheon led all players with three points. Manos finished with 11 saves, while Wheeler had 10 for Towson
Drexel is off until next Saturday, when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Robert Morris in a Colonial Athletic Association conference game.
