Durham, N.C. - The Drexel field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to 10th-ranked Duke at Williams Field on the campus of the Blue Devils. Duke used a pair of early goals to take a quick lead and hung on as both teams scored a goal in the second half. The win pushed Duke's record to 4-3 while Drexel dipped to 3-4.
The Blue Devils scored both of their first-half goals on rebounds. The opening goal was scored after Amie Survilla took a shot that seemed headed for the back of the cage until Amy Palilonis made her first defensive save of the season. The ball kicked out to Susan Ferger who was able to finish the play to give Duke the lead. Just four minutes later, Shayna McGeehan added a goal off a rebound to double the Blue Devils' lead. Drexel had chances throughout the first half to cut into the lead but were unable to convert. Sarah Gostomski fired three first-half shots but none made its way past the Duke goalie.
The second half was played evenly, though Duke added to its lead 15 minutes into the period when Marian Dickinson converted after receiving a pass from Laura Suchoski. The Dragons answered just seven minutes later as Gostomski finally broke through as she notched her second goal of the season at 56:13.
Drexel outcornered Duke, 8-4 for the game, though the Dragons were outshot, 16-12. Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew made four saves while Caitlin Williams also stopped four for Duke.
Drexel will stay in Durham to take on Appalachian State on Sunday at Williams Field. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
