Philadelphia – Towson rallied from a three-goal deficit in the fourth quarter to defeat Drexel, 9-8, in front of a capacity crowd at Vidas Field. The Tigers (8-4, 5-1 CAA) scored two goals in the final 29 seconds to earn the win and clinch at least a tie for the regular season championship and the number one seed in the Colonial Athletic Association Tournament. The Dragons (10-5, 4-1), ranked 15th in the nation, had their six-game winning streak snapped.
Jonathan Engelke scored the game-winning goal for the Tigers with just 15 seconds left. He took a pass from Bobby Griebe, who was positioned behind the net, and beat Bruce Bickford, Drexel's goalkeeper, from right in front of the net. The Dragons won the ensuing face-off and had possession in the Towson end but turned the ball over and Towson picked up the ground ball and the win in front of a capacity crowd at Vidas Field. Fourteen seconds earlier, Brian Vetter tied the score for Towson.
Drexel broke a 4-4 tie early in the fourth quarter when Brian Neary scored off a feed from Colin Ambler after the Dragons won the face-off. Drexel's Andrew Chapman scored less than two minutes later to put Drexel up 6-4. The Dragons increased their lead to 7-4 with 8:18 to play when Ambler scored his third goal of the game.
Towson opened the game with two goals in the first 2:38 of the game. Adam Hagelin scored at the 12:55 mark and just 33 seconds later, Justin Schneider scored on the man-up. The Dragons were held off the scoreboard for the first quarter, but Ron Garling and Ambler scored the only two goals of the second quarter to send the game to the half tied at 2-2.
Ambler led Drexel with four points. Ron Garling had a goal and two assists, while Chapman, the CAA's leading scorer was held to a pair of goals. Engelke, Vetter and Adam Hagelin each had two goals for Towson.
Drexel closes the regular season with a road game at Hofstra on Saturday. The Tigers host Johns Hopkins in a non-league game on Saturday.
