Philadelphia - The Drexel field hockey team scored a 3-2 victory over Penn at the Quakers' Franklin Field in a non-conference match-up. Freshman Christina Mastropaolo scored two goals to lead the Dragons to their fourth victory in the past six games. Penn struck first but the Dragons used three straight goals to down the home squad. The win pushed Drexel to an 8-7 record overall (3-2 CAA) while Penn dipped to 6-6 on the season.
Penn got on the board first as Christina Ferrier got the Quakers the opening goal just minutes into the game. The Dragons scored with 10 minutes to go in the first half when Mastropaolo picked up a pass sent from Amanda Kicera and fired the game-tying goal to send the teams to halftime knotted at 1-1. Drexel came out on fire after the intermission as Jennifer Bolger took a pass from Sarah Gostomski off a penalty corner and scored just one minute and six seconds into the second period. Less than 90 seconds later it was Mastropaolo again as the freshman sent the ball into the cage after receiving a pass from Emily Horvat. Penn would add a goal with 35 seconds remaining, but the Dragons held on for the victory.
Drexel goalie Colleen McAndrew made seven saves while Penn's Amanda Butera made two stops. For the game, the Quakers held a 15-9 edge in shots and a 9-5 advantage on penalty corners.
For their next game, the Dragons will host Northeastern on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7:00 p.m. Prior to the game, seniors Casey Mouser, Sarah Gostomski and Emily Horvat will be honored as a part of senior day festivities.
