Charleston Takes Both Games of Doubleheader
PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel softball team was defeated in a pair of games against Charleston on Saturday afternoon at the Drexel Softball Field. The Cougars took game one, 6-1, and then narrowly escaped with a win in game two, 3-2.
GAME ONE
Lindsay Nelson (2-12) started in the circle in game one and went all seven innings, fanning three batters.
Two Dragons recorded a multi-hit game in game one. Izzy Alamillo went 2-for-3 with a run scored while Lily Meuninck earned a hit twice.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With Alamillo on third, Humble grounded out to first and pushed the leadoff runner across the plate.
In the third inning, the Cougars singled up the middle to tie the game at one. In the top of the fifth, Charleston hit two solo home runs to take a 3-1 lead. The Cougars tacked on two insurance runs in the sixth and seventh to push their lead to 6-1.
GAME TWO
Jessica Schable (5-9) was in the circle for Drexel in game two and put together a strong performance. The senior went all seven, only allowing two earned runs and striking out six batters.
Devyn Demchak was perfect at the plate in the second game, going 1-for-1 and drawing three walks. Demchak's hit was a solo home run and it was the first round-tripper of her collegiate career. Ameryn Humble went 4-for-4 with a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Drexel, again, started out on top. In the second inning, Grace Abbonizio hit a double to left field and Demchak scored from second.
In the top of the third, Charleston hit a single to centerfield and advanced to second on an excellent throw from Alamillo that the Cougar runner coming home from third narrowly beat. At the end of the third, the two teams were tied at one.
An inning later, Demchak launched a home run down the right field line to put Drexel on top. But the lead did not stay for long. In the top of the fifth, Charleston scored on a throwing mishap and tied the game once more. The visitors took the lead in the top of the seventh with a home run to left field.
Drexel loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but could not push the tying run across home.
