Dragons Fall in Doubleheader

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – The Drexel softball team fell twice on Saturday on day two of the USC Upstate Wings Etc. Classic hosted by the Trojans. The Dragons fell to Iona in game one, 9-6. Drexel then dropped a close battle to the hosts, USC Upstate, 2-0.
GAME ONE
Jessica Schable (0-5) started the game in the circle for Drexel and went four innings, fanning two batters. Lindsay Nelson entered the game in relief and completed the rest of the game, three innings, also striking out two batters.
Izzy Alamillo went 3-for-5 with three singles. Ameryn Humble and Kylee Guerrera both went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.
Lily Meuninck had the biggest day for the Dragons. The sophomore went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Gaels opened the game in the first inning hitting a two-run home run. The score did not hold, however, the Dragons scored two runs in the bottom of the first. Savaanah Garcia scored the Dragons' first run of the game after a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Meuninck hit a double to left center and scored Ashley Errico and Humble.
Iona went on to score four runs in the fourth and fifth inning to push the game to an 8-3 lead. Drexel chipped away at the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Grace Abbonizio singled to right field and scored Guerrera on the play. Meuninck then drove in a run in the sixth inning to dwindle the deficit to 8-5.
In the top of the seventh Iona, tacked on a run to expand the separation. In the latter half of the inning, Abbonizio singled to right field, bringing home Guerrera.
GAME TWO
Nelson (1-4) started the second game in the circle and went six innings, holding USC to just five hits and two strikeouts.
Alamillo and Abbonizio each had a hit for the Dragons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game featured primarily defensive skill. The Dragons held the Trojans to five hits while the Dragons reached base safely twice. Both Trojan runs came from the long ball. Once in the third and the other in the fifth.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Dragons complete the USC Upstate Wings Etc. Classic on Sunday morning. The Dragons will face the Royals of NCAA Division I newcomers Queens University at 10 a.m.
