Men’s Rowing Finishes Runner-Up at Kerr Cup; Medals in Six Events

FULL RESULTS
PHILADELPHIA – At the 53rd annual Kerr Cup Regatta on Saturday afternoon from the Schuylkill River, the Drexel University men's rowing team placed second in Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup final behind Yale. On the day, the men finished with six medals in their seven finals races.
The regatta, which is hosted in conjunction with Drexel Alumni, is named in honor of Dr. Thomas Kerr, the founding coach of Drexel Rowing and former team physician.

ON THE DAY
The varsity eight, second varsity eight and third varsity eight all took second place at the Kerr Cup Regatta with Yale winning all three, Drexel finishing second and Saint Joseph's third.
The varsity eight, racing in the Lois Krall II with coxswain Hunter Reed, finished with a time of 5:58.86 behind Yale (5:46.07). The second varsity eight, in the Sandra Lee Sheller II with coxswain Thomas Kish, crossed with a time of 6:18.32 behind the Bulldogs (6:02.84). The third varsity eight, in the Louis Krall with coxswain Olivia Szabo, clocked a time of 6:17.18 with Yale (6:00.40) taking first.
The freshman eight won gold in its three-boat race with a time of 6:20.90. The Dragons beat out West Point's freshman A (6:30.78) and freshman B (7:14.06) for the victory.
The freshman four (7:07.46) also won its six-boat final ahead of Colgate (7:16.50) and Loyola (7:28.47). The varsity four (7:05.69) took home bronze with its third-place finish with Lafayette (6:55.33) winning and Fordham (7:02.27) in second.
NEXT UP
The Dragons will return to the Schuylkill River next Saturday, April 27 to compete at the Bergen and Kelly Cups, the unofficial city championships hosted by Saint Joseph's.
HISTORY & ORGINS
The Kerr Cup Regatta was established by Drexel University Alumni in 1967 to honor former Drexel Crew Coach, Dr. Thomas Kerr, Jr. Dr. Kerr passed away in 1988 at the age of 78. Dr. Kerr is credited with starting the Drexel crew program in 1957, serving as coach until 1968. He also served as the crew's team physician and surgeon. He competed in the 1932 Olympics in the four-oared boat and was a member of the national champion eight-oared Shell-Penn A.C. in 1931. Lela Kerr, Dr. Kerr's wife, passed away in January 2018 at the age of 99.
The winners of the men's varsity eight race will be awarded the Dr. Thomas Kerr Cup. The winners of the women's varsity eight race will be awarded the Lela H. Kerr Cup.
