Wrestling Drops Nonconference Affair to Cal Baptist

PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team (4-9) dropped a nonconference dual to the Cal Baptist Lancers (2-3) on Saturday evening from the Daskalakis Athletic Center by a final of 19-16.
Sophomore Evan Barczak (157), No. 14-ranked junior Ebed Jarrell (165), No. 15-ranked redshirt senior Stephen Loiseau (197) and No. 14-ranked redshirt senior Joey Goodhart (HWT) picked up wins in the Saturday night team loss.
Cal Baptist got major decision at 174 pounds to start the dual as Bryce Buckley wrestled junior Owen Brooks. Brooks was starting in a dual at 174 pounds for the first time on the year but Buckley got the best of him in the 18-4 final.
Freshman Anthony Walters then dropped a close 3-2 decision to Cal Baptist's Garrett Strang at 184 pounds. Walters picked up escapes in the second and third but could not even the match late. Drexel fell behind 7-0 after the opening losses.
#15 Loiseau continued his dominance on the mat as he handily defeated the Lancers' Ali'i Loyola in the 197-pound bout. The redshirt senior went up 6-0 in the first with a takedown and four nearfall points. He owned the mat in the second period as he held Loyola in a controlling position throughout and earned four nearfall points on three separate occasions for the big 18-0 win. He improved to 18-5 on the year and 10-0 in technical fall matches. The victory gave Drexel five team points as they trailed 7-5. He now has 91 career wins, tied for 14th on Drexel's all-time leaderboard.
#14 Goodhart won a 5-0 decision at heavyweight over Cal Baptist's Zach Schrader to put Drexel on top in the dual, 8-7, for their only advantage of the night. The redshirt senior had an opening period takedown, adding an escape and stall point in the second to go up 4-0. His 1:09 of riding time gave him the decision victory. He now has a team-best 26 wins on the year and 94 for his career, placing him 12th on Drexel's all-time leaderboard.
As the dual turned back over to lightweights, Cal Baptist picked up wins at 125, 133, 141 and 149 pounds. The four wins put them up 19-8 overall as Drexel needed two pins to wins.
Barczak faced Jaron Pagaduan at 157 pounds. The sophomore had three first-period takedowns to go up 6-0. He earned a stall point and a reversal to go up 9-3 after the second. Looking for the takedown in the third period, he scored four takedowns, but could not secure the pin as he earned a 17-7 major decision and the Dragons four points. It came as his 20th win of the season as he improved to 20-10. Cal Baptist led 19-12 heading into the final bout.
With the team win now out of reach, #14 Jarrell picked up his 18th win of the season at 165 pounds against Cal Baptist's Jacob Cooper in an 11-0 major decision. He led 3-0 after the first and 7-0 after the second. In total, he recorded three takedowns, three stall points, one escape and the riding time point for 3:48 of control.
