PHILADELPHIA – Drexel Wrestling dropped a 33-0 home dual to 10th-ranked Pittsburgh at the Daskalakis Athletic Center on Sunday. The loss moves the Dragons to 2-2. The Panthers improve to 4-1 overall.
The match began at 184 pounds, where Owen Brooks lost by 17-5 major decision to No. 8 Nino Bonaccorsi. No. 23 Kellan Stout then added a 6-1 decision against Bryan McLaughlin.
Sean O'Malley started aggressively against fifth-ranked Demetrius Thomas, the reigning ACC heavyweight champion, but eventually dropped an 11-3 major decision as Pitt built an 11-0 lead.
Flipping over to the lighter weights, Louis Newell topped Antonio Mininnio by a 10-5 decision.
At 133 pounds, Chandler Olson stayed close to No. 4 Mickey Phillippi through the first two periods before eventually losing in a 12-3 major decision. Olson trailed 2-0 after the opening period and was down only 5-0 heading to the final period, where the defending 133-pound ACC champion pulled away.
The last five matches were all decided by tight decisions. Julian Flores and No. 15 Cole Matthews battled to a scoreless stalemate until the third period. Matthews broke the deadlock with an escape and collected the riding time point for a 2-0 decision victory at 141 pounds.
Luke Kemerer's takedown of Jared Donahue in the first period proved decisive in the 149-pound bout as Kemerer topped Donahue, 4-2.
Anthony Colello surged in the third period to hand Felix Belga an 8-4 decision loss at 157 pounds. Belga struck first with a takedown inside the first three minutes and led 4-3 after two periods.
No. 15 Ebed Jarrell and No. 10 Jake Wentzel clashed at 165 pounds in the lone bout between ranked opponents. A high-octane first period saw Wentzel grab an 8-4 advantage. Jarrell shaved a point off his deficit with a second-period escape but could not break down Wentzel for any further scoring in a 9-5 loss.
No. 29 Michael O'Malley ended the day with a 6-2 decision loss to Gregg Harvey. O'Malley trailed 3-1 after two periods and started the third in the down position. He earned an escape, but a late Harvey takedown and riding time advantage sealed the bout.
Drexel returns to the mat on Saturday, when it hosts LIU at 4 p.m.
