Women's Tennis Splits Afternoon at VCU Invitational

RICHMOND, VA. - Drexel women's tennis went 1-1 at the VCU Invitational on Friday afternoon with a 4-0 victory against Campbell and a 6-0 loss to VCU.

The Dragons fell 6-0 to VCU, with the Dragons only win coming from the doubles duo of Salma Ziouti and Tara Veluvolu. The duo teamed up to verse Paolo Exposito Diaz-Delgado and Kanako Yano, 6-4, in the No. 2 spot, however, it was not enough to ultimately claim the doubles point.

In singles action, the Dragons had a chance to take a point off the rams thanks to Marta Martinez. Martinez dropped the first set to Melissa Ifidzhen in the No. 5 spot before coming back to win the second, 6-4, but could not keep the momentum and dropped the third set.

Drexel redeemed themselves later in the afternoon, earning a 4-0 victory against Campbell. Duos Ziouti/Veluvolu and Katarina Majorova/Martinez teamed up for wins in the No. 2 and No. 3 spots to claim the doubles point. Ghita Benhadi set the momentum in singles action, notching the first singles win of the day in the No. 3 spot against Alex Nicoara, 6-3, 6-1. Ziouti followed her lead, beating Ana Castillo in three games at the top of the latter, 6-3, 1-6, 10-6, while Veluvolu clinched the final point in the No. 4 spot, 6-3, 6-0.

Drexel will return to action when it verses Penn on Wednesday, Jan. 23 in a road match beginning at 2 p.m.
