PHILADELPHIA – The Drexel wrestling team could not pull out its second upset of a top-25 opponent in as many matches Friday night as the Dragons fell to No. 10 Cornell in front of a raucous Daskalakis Athletic Center crowd on Spirit Night, 22-13. The Dragons dropped to 10-4 (4-4 EIWA), while the Big Red moved to 10-2 (5-0 EIWA).
Starting at 165 pounds, Ebed Jarrell got the Spirit Night crowd to its feet with a 13-5 major decision over Adam Santoro to give the Dragons an early advantage at a key weight class. The Big Red would turn the match back in its favor with decisions at 174, 184, 197 and 285 pounds to take a 12-4 advantage into halftime. No. 18 Brandon Womack was able to outlast the Dragons' No. 32 Austin Rose at 174 pounds, 2-0, to get on the board, followed by No. 11 Max Dean taking an 8-3 decision from No. 26 Alex DeCiantis. At 197 pounds, No. 17 Stephen Loiseau wrestled national title-contender No. 3 Ben Darmstadt close, but Darmstadt come away with a 6-4 decision. The Dragons then wrestled senior Josh Murphy at heavyweight, but it was Cornell's 285-pounder No. 25 Jeramy Sweany who took a 6-1 decision.
After the break, Zack Fuentes and No. 4 Austin DeSanto gave the Dragons life with decisions. Fuentes never gave Noah Baughman a chance at 125 pounds, winning, 6-0. At 133-pounds, No. 4 Austin DeSanto outlasted a pesky Chaz Taylor, 2-1. However, Cornell would again hold the Dragons from gaining too much momentum. At 141 pounds, Yianni Diakomihalis beat Julain Flores by fall in 1:21 before 149-pounder No. 32 Will Koll took a 10-0 major decision from No. 30 Trevor Elfvin to put the match out of reach. Before the night was over, though, the Dragons did take one more decision as No. 22 Garett Hammond beat Kyle Simaz, 7-4.
The Dragons take their final road trip of the regular season to our nation's capital Sunday afternoon to take on American at 2 p.m.
