Dragons Come From Behind for Dramatic Homecoming Win over Northeastern, 68-67
1/27/2018 4:00:00 PM | Men's Basketball
Philadelphia – The Drexel men's basketball team closed the game on a 7-0 run and Tramaine Isabell's last-second free throws lifted the Dragons in a dramatic come-from-behind win Saturday over Northeastern on Homecoming at the Daskalakis Athletic Center, 68-67. The loss snapped the Huskies four-game winning streak, while the Dragons (9-14, 3-7) won their second straight.
Drexel trailed 67-61 after Tomas Murphy grabbed an offensive board and put it back in with 2:20 to go. That turned out to be the last points of the day for the Huskies (14-8, 7-3 CAA), as the visitors missed three straight one and one opportunities to give Drexel a window to cut the lead. The Dragons did just that, although they made just three of six freebies in a span of 22 seconds. With just two seconds to go, Isabell tied it with his first free throw, but missed the potential game winner. The rebound was tipped towards the Drexel bench. Isabell was able to grab the loose ball and was fouled with just one tick left on the clock. He made the first and missed the second. Northeastern got the ball out of bounds after an errant buzzer with 0.7 left on the clock. NU got the ball inbounds, but Vasa Pusica's shot just inside of half court came up short.
Isabell led all scorers with 21 points to go along with seven rebounds, four assists and two steals. Austin Williams had a double-double, his sixth of the season, with 13 points and 11 boards. He also swatted six shots. Sammy Mojica added 13 points, nine rebounds and four steals.
Northeastern's Pusica led the Huskies with 20 points and seven assists. Murphy had 16 points off the bench, including 10 in the first half. Shawn Occeus, who entered the game leading the CAA in steals, added five more to his total.
The Dragons' defense kept them in the game in the first half. Drexel held Northeastern off the board for a stretch of 5:30 late in the first half. During that time, the Dragons scored eight points and took the lead with 5:06 to play at 28-27. The Huskies answered with seven straight points and took a 36-32 lead at the break. The Huskies converted four three-point plays in the half. Isabell had 13 points for DU.
The Dragons will face James Madison on Thursday at 7 p.m. It will be the final game of the Dragons' three-game home stand.
